What’s better than one lone oyster shucker? How about a dozen fishermen and seafood vendors, shucking oysters, hauling in their catch, and swapping stories? You can see all that and more by coming to the New Amsterdam Market on Sunday, Dec. 18th from 11 am to 4 pm!
Element Seafood is proud to participate in the seasonal Wintermarket celebration, marking the 50th market held on South Street. Over 70 vendors will be on display, and for the first time ever, there will be a special focus on our local fisheries. About a dozen local seafood entrepreneurs will be present, sharing freshly caught wares and sharing the best of the season’s bivalves. We will have a variety of oysters available for sale (including some rare Belon oysters!), along with clams and mussels. Come enjoy an oyster or six on the spot, and take some shellfish with you for an easy home-cooked meal.
In addition, you’ll be able to enjoy the crisp smell of juniper and smoked meats in the air while strolling through New York’s historic South Street Seaport. The New Amsterdam Market envisions reopening a permanent fish market on this site, where “the public can gather along with cooks, chefs, shopkeepers, distributors, growers, and other participants in an evolving local food system.” We certainly support these goals and think a year-round wholesale and retail seafood market would be a great boon to the Lower Manhattan community.
So stop by, slurp some briny oyster liquor and watch the oyster shells pile up, while you support local and small-scale fisheries!
